Proudly Supporting Easter Seals BC

Peninsula Co-op is proud to support the Easter Seals British Columbia & Yukon (BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities) with a $100,000 contribution towards their Camp Shawnigan rebuild.

The $25 million transformation of Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan will create North America’s first year-round, purpose-built multi-functional retreat destination for children, youth and adults with physical and developmental disabilities, their families, and caregivers. No longer will a person with a disability have to rely on a willing bystander or family member to provide direct assistance.

Peninsula Co-op has supported Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan since 2008, providing donations to ensure families from Vancouver Island are able to participate in the life changing experience this camp has to offer. “This incredible organization has been a beacon of hope and support for individuals with varied disabilities, providing essential services and opportunities for growth and independence,” said Patti Hunter, Peninsula Co-op Board member. “Our contributions to Easter Seals now surpass $165,000 with this capital donation, specifically aiding in the rebuilding and revitalization of Camp Shawnigan, a place that has brought smiles and unforgettable experiences to countless campers.”

“The new Camp Shawnigan is a visionary project that will allow us to deliver life-changing programs for people with disabilities, in a fully inclusive and accessible space,” says Mike Leland with Easter Seals BC / Yukon. “This will no longer just be a camp for kids for six weeks of the year. The new space will allow us to run year-round programming, serve more people, and meet the needs of the disability community in ways we’ve only dreamed. It will also become a space for leading edge research and education for industry professionals. But at $25 million, it is an ambitious project and that is why we are so thankful for partners like Peninsula Co-op for their generous support. This project only happens if the community leaders like Peninsula Co-op step up to serve their community – and that is what they’ve done here with their generous contribution.”
